Why it exists

This one came out of the same weeks. Once you are looking hard at a browser carrying that much at once, the next question is what all of it is actually holding on to.

Chrome knows. It will tell you, three menus deep, and then offer you one button that clears everything and signs you out of every site you use. That is not a tool, it is a demolition.

The interesting part turned out not to be the measuring. Ranking sites by size is easy. Knowing which ones are safe to clear is the entire product.

What we decided

• Measured, not estimated

  Real per-site sizes in gigabytes, because the whole reason anybody opens this is to find the one site quietly holding sixteen of them. An estimate would not answer the question that brought you here.

• Say which ones will hurt

  Trackers get labelled as trackers. Sites that will sign you out get a warning before you clear them, not an apology afterwards. A list sorted by size with no judgement attached just moves the decision back onto you.

• Never clear the page someone is using

  Anything open in a tab right now is flagged and held out of a sweep automatically. Pulling storage out from under a page being worked in is the one failure that would make the tool untrustworthy.
